»Otello« and »Don Carlo« to return in May

Szene aus »Don Carlo«

Dresden, 2 May 2024. From May 2024, Verdi’s legendary operas »Otello« and »Don Carlo« are returning to the Semperoper stage with a medley of stars. The run of Verdi in Dresden begins on Sunday, 5 May 2024, with the music drama »Otello« originally staged by Vincent Boussard in 2017. The sets for this co-production with the Salzburg Easter Festival were created by Vincent Lemaire, while the costumes are the work of star designer Christian Lacroix. Under conductor John Fiore, Gregory Kunde will appear as Otello and Hrachuhí Bassénz as Desdemona (both sing-ing these roles for the first time in Dresden); performers making their role debuts include Nicole Chirka as Emilia, Aleksei Isaev as Iago and Joseph Dennis as Cassio.

One week later, on Sunday, 12 May 2024, Vera Nemirova’s staging of »Don Carlo«, also co-pro-duced with the Salzburg Easter Festival, returns to the Semperoper. For this production, which premiered in October 2021, the German composer and conductor Manfred Trojahn wrote an or-chestral Prologue as well as an Interlude for solo cello. Under conductor Jordi Bernàcer, the per-formances in May and June 2024 will feature a sparkling cast: audiences can look forward to star tenor Stefan Pop in the title role supported by Elena Guseva, Nikola Hillebrand and Christoph Pohl. Alexandros Stavrakakis will make his role debut as Filippo II while Yulia Matochkina will make her Semperoper debut in the role of Principessa Eboli.
