In brief

Floating harmonies

»One of the first great masterpieces of the 21st century« – Sir Simon Rattle’s verdict on the one-hour ensemble work »in vain« by the Staatskapelle’s Composer-in-Residence, Georg Friedrich Haas. Written in response to the Austrian government’s lurch to the right at the turn of the millennium, the work is a study in musical contrasts. Chromatic runs that seem to spiral breathlessly upwards are juxtaposed with sections in which the auditorium lights are completely extinguished, and floating microtonal sound spectra envelop the listener.
