In brief
From Prometheus to Apollo
Schumann and Dresden – not, unfortunately, a tale of love. While it is true that around a third of Robert Schumann’s entire oeuvre was written between 1844 and 1850 when the couple lived in Dresden, it was not until 1858 that the Royal Kapelle posthumously included for the first time one of his symphonies in its programme: Carl Gottlieb Reißiger combined the passionate First, inspired by Schubert’s Great and which Schumann wrote in only four days in 1841, with Beethoven’s »The Creatures of Prometheus«. After emigrating from his Russian homeland, Igor Stravinsky led a busy life as an itinerant conductor. In 1929 his international travels took him to Dresden, where he conducted the Staatskapelle.
